Welcome to the 1820 Settlers to South Africa Web Site

PLEASE READ THIS NOTE..

* I maintain this website as a part of my genealogy hobby when time permits - I still work full time and am often away from my mail and systems.
* I do not get paid for this website - I pay the hosting costs out of my own pocket.
* 90% of the family tree information is supplied by you, the user.  I do not have time to verify it all for accuracy.  I take your input in good faith.
* I try to update this website as often as I can, but it may be up to a month before your contributions are published.
* To those who have and do send me updates and additions to the 1820 Settler family trees, they are welcome, as it all helps towards creating a complete and accurate record for future generations.  Thank you.
* I get approximately 200 emails a day in my in-box, of which 85% are spam - I still have to check them.  I get approximately 40 emails for user registration requests per day - I visually check each one for approval, as most are from automated systems trying to break into the site.
* If I miss your genuine registration request, I apologise - send me a direct email and I will check back on it.
* I try and monitor the Forum and Guestbook, and articles for hacked abusive/advertising entries as often as I can, and then have to spend time clearing out the garbage.  Apologies if I miss some - but let me know anyway.

Paul

***  New Request  ***
I have added a photo album under the Picture Gallery, called "Who Do You Think They Are?".   These are photographs of 1820 Settlers or their descendants that have come to light, and we are desperately trying to identify the subjects in the photos.  If you are able to positively identify anyone in the photos, please send me an email ( paul@1820settlers.com) with PHOTO ID in the subject line, and give me details of the persons in the photo number.  Many Thanks.

This Genealogy website is a totally free website, dedicated to the British Settlers to South Africa in 1820, their descendants and researchers. All the information has been generously supplied or posted by the members of this website.

There are Settler Family Trees under the 1820 Settler Genealogies link on the left., submitted by members and other researchers. They are completely searchable, and are hyperlinked to get to the different formats of display. We hope you find something of interest to help you in your research. Genealogies currently being added!

Downloads. Transcriptions of the 1820 Settler Letters, Grahamstown Journal pages, various pictures and images can be downloaded from here for perusal at your leisure.
There are 'free' Genealogy software programmes available as well.

Feedback. Tell me what you think of the site, what you'd like to see, etc...

Forums are where you can enter discussions with other visitors to the website. If you'd like a new section opened up, let me know through the Feedback section.

Please sign my Guest Book, leave a comment for me, or the rest of the World. You can see what I look like too! Thanks

The Picture Gallery is a collection of photos and sketches of 1820 Settlers, Maps of the Area, Settler places, etc. Follow the links and click on the picture to get a bigger view, and again for full size of the picture. If you have more for us, please submit them.

New addition, the Reference Book Lists, where I aim to build up a list of all the published books on the 1820 Settlers and associated reference books. Again, please submit details if you have a book not on the list. I do NOT have any of these books for sale, but you can 'google' on the web for them - or try www.abebooks.com, www.addall.com.

The Topics section is a collection of Stories and Newspaper articles relevant to the 1820 Settlers, giving the modern day reader a 'flavour' of how and where they lived, what they did, etc. Your stories will be gladly accepted, and you can send them via the Submit News section.
Previous Stories and Topics are kept in the Stories Archive
NOT YET Completely REBUILT - sorry

The Web Links section is a collection of links to other websites that have 1820 Settler related content, or on general South African Genealogy.

If you have an 1820 Settler to South Africa in your ancestry, why not let me have your Gedcom file with your data, and I will add it here for you and all the other researches to view. See Below.

This site was born out of an idea and discussions tossed around by members and listers of the SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH-L@rootsweb.com mailing list, which is specifically for British Immigrants to South Africa, up to the year 1900. I also subscribe to the SOUTH-AFRICA-EASTERN-CAPE-L@rootsweb.com mailing list, which is very active and has a very knowledgeable membership.

Updates and additions requested!!

I am attempting to get the information on each of the 3800+ British 1820 Settlers to South Africa as accurate as possible, and this is where you can help.
If you spot an error, or have an update or addition of data that you are willing to share with the rest of the 1820 Settler researchers, please let me know. Email me directly or use the feedback form. It would also help me in identifying the correct Settler for whom you have updates, if you could give me the Settler ID number with that detail. I can then post it to the correct person in the database.

If you would like to submit a complete GEDCOM file of an 1820 Settler family, to as many generations as you care to publish, I will willingly publish it to the Trees section on your behalf. I will not change that data, it will be yours! I would recommend 4 or 5 generations, hiding details of living persons, etc.

Many Thanks
Paul, the webmaster!
