Notes: "When Thomas returned to England with some of his children he apparently set about ‘bettering’ the family through careful marriages. His descendants married into a quite well known family of artists and their daughter to the founder of Crosse & Blackwell becoming very rich indeed. From there they married into the aristocracy and one nephew married the widow of the great grand nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte whilst another married a granddaughter of Queen Victoria (they were the parents of Lord Louis Mountbatten). Unfortunately my branch of the family remained in Kendal and were poor farmers for generations - probably never knowing how successful Thomas and his descendants became.
