Notes |
- Birth Cert 19382,
Vanda's memories of what her father told her about her grandfather:
left Australia at 13 years old on the Windjammers. Went back when he was 16 and still couldn't agree with his father. Left again and ended up in Capetown where he joined a newspaper. Fought on the British Side in the Boer War.
(This info is almost certainly wrong because the tone of his father's letter and notes to him show no sign of disagreement and because he has a written reference from a lawyer (Slattery) in Sydney dated May 1901; also a letter of reference from the Daily Telegraph Newspaper in Sydney, dd 15 March 1900 saying that he had been employed there for three years.)
We have photos of Ernie armed, on a horse, with the inscription "Boer rebellion", but this may well have been after the Boer war.
There are photographs of Ernie as an officer in a prison camp? for Chinese workers who were presumably employed in the Gold Mines. On one of the contemporary documents his occupation was listed as a "cyanider" so he undoubtedly worked on a Gold Mine treatment plant.
From Cris Waller's conversation with Vernon J StG Peters in April 1997:
Farm HartebeestKuil was bought on the Government loan plan. Maize mainly; 12 miles from Val Station on the Durban train line. Nearest sizable town was Standerton.
Died aged 41 following fall from horse.
