The family bible which was presented to Richard Isaac Gravett by his mother Charlotte Pickstock on August 1, 1862. The inscription reads:
"R.I. Gravett. Salem. Presented to him by his affectionate mother. Aug. 1st 1862.
Open thou mine eyes that I may behold wonderous things out of thy law."
Richard Gravett and his family lived on the farm Newing Green Salem during the 1870's and sometime during the 1880's moved to Rooi Kraal in the district of Heidelberg. The family appear to have continued to live there
