My Lord,

Having heard that it was the intention of Government to send out a colony to the South of Africa and being a poor industrious man with a family I take the liberty of offering myself to your Lordship’s consideration. I am a carpenter and find it impossible to support a wife and three children by my most earnest endeavours. I therefore hope your Lordship will have the goodness to include me and my family among those going out and I trust I shall always be found willing to promote the welfare and prosperity of the colony by my industry and good conduct and will ever pray for your Lordship
