My Lord

Having a desire to proceed to the Cape of Good Hope agreeable to the Circular issue some time ago from Downing Street,  I should feel much honoured by Your Lordship’s reply stating how far the grant would run and wether as a Commissioner Officer in His Majesty’s Naval Services I should be subject to the taking with me a specific number of people.

I have the Honor to be with due respect, My Lord

Your Lordships most obedient humble serv’t

David NIGHTINGALE  Lieu’t  RN

[Transcriber’s note: Not in Nash but listed in Hockly’s ‘ Story of the British Settlers of 1820’ as the head of the independent party on the Amphitrite – see correspondence of John LEIGH]
