Liverpool

27th Sept 1819

My Lord,

I have respectfully to apply to your Lordship for information as to whom and in what place money is to be paid by persons wishing to go out as settlers to the Cape of Good Hope or New South Wales. The man for whom I take the liberty of requesting the above information is a native of Newcastle upon Tyne from which place he has brought an excellent character, is about 45 years of age and has been brought up as a gardener, in which capacity he has served several noblemen and gentlemen.

Several persons in this town have advertised themselves as being [obscured] agents but none of them are [thought] to be of respectability and as some frauds have been practiced here in that way the man is unwilling to part with his money unless [sure] that it was to a proper person.

I have therefore to beg your Lordship will be pleased to order me to be informed (as soon as may [suit] your convenience) of such [obscured] as may be necessary to enable the person for whom I apply to deposit his money safely and procure a passage to either place.

I have the honour to be my Lord

Your Lordship’s most obed’t servant

Joseph W. RUSSELL
