SMITH, P re BRADSHAW’s Party
1077
[from P. SMITH, who worked at the Colonial Office]
13 Nov 1819
Memorandum
I send herewith to Mr. GOULBURN the original return of Mr. COOPER’s people, from which it will appear that the several items of deposit money have been charged in conformity with the Regulations – and consequently that every single extra child, as it is called, has been charged at £2 10s and not at £5 as has been stated by Mr. COOPER.
In the family of the last person on the list there is a girl aged 17 returned among the children of a settler whose age is stated to be 23. She was therefore charged £10 as a sister, servant or stranger to the family.
Mr. COOPER’s calculations of the amount of deposit money which BRADSHAW will have to pay in consequence of reductions and alterations in his list are not correct. But in order to do away all misunderstanding I shall send to Mr. COOPER a copy of BRADSHAW’s Return as it will now stand, accompanied by the several charges of deposit money.
P.S.
Return of Settlers proceeding to the Cape of Good Hope under the direction of Samuel BRADSHAW of the Parish of Cam in the County of Gloucester, Weaver, comprised of families from that & the surrounding parishes
