My dear Sir,
I have been requested by a Gentleman of the name of DAMANT now resident at Fakenham in this county & who has entered into an engagement to take persons out to the Cape to make an application to you on a point to which I shall be obliged to you if you will favour me with an immediate answer. He has an estate of considerable magnitude on the Gamtoos River and is very desirous of improving his breed of cattle by taking out two Devon bulls & two cart stallion. Is any facility afforded by Government for importation of cattle? He further informs me Lord Charles SOMERSET carried out several [obscured – horses?] but being of the Racing and not Cart kind have not [agreed?] the purposes of the [obscured.]
I remain my dear Sir
Your very faithful servant

My dear Sir,
I shall be much obliged to you if you will instruct me how a Parish ought to proceed in the case of a man being drawn in the Militia who had previously entered into an engagement to go to the Cape of Good Hope. An instance of the kind has arisen in this neighbourhood & the friends of the man are desirous of releasing him from his contract of emigration. I am at a loss to say when the bargain [obscured] be said to be compulsory or whether the parish should proceed to a fresh ballot.
Pray excuse the trouble I am giving to you and believe me
Your ever faithful servant
Edmond WODEHOUSE
