Generation: 1

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Johannes Bertram was born about 1775 in Waldbrühl, Germany; died on 1 Dec 1847.

    Notes:

    The Dutch East India Company had to supply their own defense force to prevent, mainly, the English from taking over, so they contracted mercenaries from Europe. Johan was a cavalry officer in the French Army, Cologne was closely allied to France, and was recruited from there. He arrived in the Cape in about 1795. It is very likely they were stationed on what is now Farm France in the Banhoek Valley.
    He and Petronella moved up to the Eastern Cape, to Uitenhage, and the family married extensively into 1820 settler families. Petronella came to SA via the East Indies. The family were refugees from France so presumably were Huguenots although not part of the SA Huguenot settlers. They seemed to have some wealth and she was very cultured. {Jason van der Schyff}
