The Party was located on the tributary of the Bush River. Thomas did not stay with the Party for the mandatory three years that would have entitled him to claim a share of the land but abandoned the location almost immediately. He applied for, and was duly issued, with a colonial pass to allow him to seek work elsewhere.
He took to farming, and acquired a property just west of Graham's Town, which he called Coldstream, where he successfully pursued his farming till his death in 1849, at the age of sixty-five years.

name EASMENT in Matrimonial Court Minutes

William Estment was born 2 April 1803 possibly in Dorsetshire. His early life is a bit of a mystery. He sailed on the Kennersley Castle with Phillips' Party. He joined the party as a late replacement for a chap who had decided to marry and stay behind in England. On the official list his name appears as Esmond. He eventually became a dealer in wines and spirits. It seems as if he was also a money lender as there are a number of files in the Cape Archives dealing with court cases wherein he was sueing various people for money owed. Late in life he was a director of the Fort Beaufort Bank. He was involved in the War of the Axe wherein he led an attack on the enemy at Wolfs Crag. After Ann died he married Elizabeth Saynor in 1854. She died in 1856. He then married a widow, Mary Mandy born Dougherty in 1856. He died 18 Dec 1869 at his home near Dundas Bridge in Grahamstown aged 66 years. On 1853 Grahamstown voters list as shopkeeper in Beaufort Street.

Memories of an 1820 Great Gran

Mrs. May LEONARD, 91 years old and now living in Port Elizabeth, remembers her 1820 Settler great-grandmother, Sarah BRADLEY very well as she was six years old when Sarah died.

Living in Seymour, she used to cross the little Geysie River by a two-plank bridge to visit her aged relative. Sarah's garden was a delight with its fruit trees, big shady Bellomore and one Moss rose, which May particularly remembers. The house and tree were still there a few years ago.

Sarah was born in England, third child of RANDALL parents, shortly before the Weymouth sailed. This was confirmed by Dr. PRINGLE who investigated reported births during the voyage. These had not been recorded in the ship's log as the Weymouth being of Royal Navy was only required to record deaths.

So Sarah was a baby when she arrived off Port Elizabeth in 1820 and she was the baby dropped into Algoa Bay when the bundle of rags in which she was wrapped was being handed from the Weymouth to the occupants of the boat alongside. She was fished out of the water and lived to continue an adventurous life, which included loading guns for the men during an attack on their thornbush-ringed stockade.

A daughter from her first marriage became May's grandmother.

At Seymour where they later settled, she was married again to SELBY, who was killed while transporting their produce to Grahamstown. BRADLEY was her third husband.

She died in Seymour, aged 77, but her mother, Sarah RANDALL, lived to 100, according to her monument at Bathurst.
