    Notes:

Extracted from "The Settlers Handbook" by M D Nash:
"Joseph (37) and Ann (25) and their 4 children (they were the result of Joseph's first marriage to Ann Lawrence) were part of Samuel Bradshaw's Party of 1820 Settlers. Most of the party came from Cam, near Dursley, Gloucestershire and had been recommended and sponsored by the Cam parish authorities who were anxious to relieve the parish purse who were 'overburdened with poor'. The party sailed from Bristol in the regular transport ship "Kennersley Castle" on the 10th January 1820 and arrived in Table Bay on the 29th March and Algoa Bay on the 29th April 1820. A fellow gentleman traveller thought Bradshaw was an 'obliging farmer' but dismissed the party from the parish as 'a horrid dirty set and the pest of the ship'. The party was located in Albany on the Torrens River and the location was named New Gloucester."

Joseph had the following occupations during his lifetime: ferryman at Port Alfred (abt 1830); farmer at Winterberg; weaver; fisherman; joined the 52nd Regiment. His second marriage was a double wedding, with his brother Henry (who married Sarah Smith) on the 22 December 1819 at Cam, Gloucester, just prior to leaving for South Africa. He died at the home of his daughter Ann and her husband George Wiggill at the age of 74 years.

In "Bradshaw's party of the 1820 Settlers" by Dorothea Rowse published in the Familia vol 33, no 2 & 3, 1996, the following appears on page 43-44 (part 2) :
"...Joseph named after his paternal grandfather. He was married three times. His wife, a local girl, Ann Lawrence, died some time after the birth of their daughter, Ann, in 1817. He married his second wife, Ann Watts, on the eve of their departure for the Cape with Bradshaws Party of 1820 Settlers on the 22nd December 1819, but she only survived three years of the harsh existence in South Africa. In 1825 he married Mary, the widow of fellow settler James Jennings. Mary had three sons from her first marriage - Ephraim, Joseph, and James - and a further two children were born to the couple. By the late 1820's Joseph had a total of nine children to support".
