    Other Events and Attributes:

    Notes:

Quoted by Tombi Peck on Rootwebs South Africa Eastern Cape Mailing list, February 2008
"I suspect that Samuel may have, rather like Richard TAINTON his daughter Amelia's father in law been a lay missionary!!
The family story was that Amelia Lockington TAINTON (nee STANGER) wrote to her 'brother in England' must have been her father's younger brother James who had lived with them before they left England describing the attack on and destruction of the Gwanga Mission Station which was run by her in-laws Richard and Ann Brooks TAINTON!! It was, apparently the third and last time it was burned!!
By chance I found a family Memorial as I was struck by the name 'TAINTON' that appeared on a square memorial not far from the obelisk in the Kingwilliamstown Cemetery. I'd gone to the cemetery to see the obelisk erected by public subscription to Richard George TAINTON, his brother John James Henry TAINTON and William BROWN who were murdered at Kwelegha near East London on the 31st December 1877.....later it was used as a memorial to men who died during some of the Frontier Wars....

Unfortunately before I visited the cemetery in Kingwilliamstown I'd visited the Amatole museum where I had used up the film taking pictures of the portraits of Richard George TAINTON and his wife Amelia Lockington TAINTON (nee STANGER) which were shown to me by Stephanie Victor the Curator of the museum (not good photographs as they were taken in a rather dark store-room where I had to use a flash (not a digital camera). I took down the inscription into the back of my address book (I've kept the original notes but have transcribed them into my computer programme). later very kindly sent photographs of the obelisk and its inscription by a list member!

In case anyone else is interested in the inscriptions I will add the transcription here:

"Sacred to the memory of James W.S. WEIR aged 11 months and on the 17th June 1899 Margaret Wilson WEIR aged 26 years and John Goven WEIR born 14th June 1870 died 1st June 1938 and of Mercy Winnifred WEIR born 4th March 1879 died 28th March 1951 and of Amy WEIR born 9th July 1871 died 4th January 1959."
on the same pillar 2nd side:
"Sacred to the memory of James WEIR, Margaret his wife and two sons, parents and brothers and James W. WEIR and of Samuel STANGER died August 1877, Amelia his wife died 1867, parents of Mercy A. WEIR and of James Wilson WEIR died 9th September 1909 aged 67 years. Mercy STANGER beloved wife of James Wilson WEIR born 23rd March 1837. Died 23rd September 1910."
on the same pillar 3rd side:
"Sacred to the memory of John Wallace WEIR born 2nd May 1874 died 3rd June 1956 and of Violet Annie WEIR (nee PERKS) born 20th October 1875 and died 3rd June 1955 and Kathleen Prescott ORSMOND (formerly VORSTER born WEIR) born 18th December 1903 died 20th May 1978."
Same pillar 4th and final side:
"In memory of Lydia Mary LEE (nee TAINTON) born 7th August 1824 and died in King William's Town 24th December 1888 widow of the late Major Wm Lee HM 6th Foot and previously of John CROSS Imperial Cornet Dept. who was killed by Kaffirs in the war of 1852 and buried at Mount KOKE (that's the way it's spelled on the memorial) also Julia Catherine daughter or R. TAINTON born 25th April 1828 died 13th July 1890."

That headstone neatly shows the relationships between the STANGER, WEIR, TAINTON, CROSS, LEE and ORSMOND families if one didn't already know that they were related.

It is obvious to me now that Mercy WEIR (nee STANGER) named her eldest child (who died as an infant) after her uncle James who obviously stayed in England."

He was the Treasurer of the Cuylerville Building Society from which the school (no longer standing) and the Church (now a National Monument) were put up. Settler H.J. Lloyd and his family were given land with the other members of Bailie's party at Cuylerville. He was the Treasurer of the Cuylerville Building Society from which the school (no longer standing) and the Church (now a National Monument) were put up.
He and his family were in the defence of Cuylerville during the Frontier War of 1835. A desperate battle was fought here. The defenders were short of ammunition and, to make matters worse, were taking cover in long dry grass with the wind blowing down on them from the enemy's position. The Xhosa set fire to the grass and the flames came roaring down on to the already precarious position of the beleaguered settlers. Someone must have prayed hard for the wind suddenly changed and blew the fire back on to the Xhosa, scorching them out and saving Cuylerville.
On the Lloyd tomb at Cuylerville these words appear:
"It pleased God to call away
    Our brothers from our side
Just in the morning of their days
As young as we, they died".
