Notes from the book re the sailing of Brilliant
"All arrangements complete, and armed with the letters from Earl Bathurst and Sir John Barrow, who had given the scheme much encouragement, Captain Moodie and his apprentices set sail from Leith for London and from there on the 14th of March 1817 aboard the brig "Brilliant" (William Young, Master) bound for the Cape of Good Hope...... and the Cape Town Gazette announced the arrival, on the 4th of June 1817, aboard the Brilliant of "Messrs Moudy, Hay, Tait and Laing and 49 (other) English mechanics and labourers under the direction of Mr Moudy"

"By the time that John (Moodie) had left the Bushmans River area, Capt. Moodie had been gone for 4 years, driven back to Groot Vaders Bosch by his debt and his indentured mechanics. But when initially he had moved to Long Hope in 1822, he firmly believed that he would establish a permanent home there. In the well-timbered forests on Long Hope he had set the servants he retained from the Royal African Corps and also some of his own people - David Hulme, Hill, Robert Scoon, John McGregor, Cairns and McLucky (or McCluskie) to the back-breaking task of felling trees and sawing planks and beams.Their labour brought handsome returns in Uitenhage and Grahamstown and at Algoa Bay....."
