OCCUPATION PRIOR TO MIGRATION TO S.A.: FRAMEWORK KNITTER

NOTE: It was apparently the death of their eldest son, John, that was the final straw that prompted Thomas to make the decision to go to the Cape Colony; for John had been murdered. This had been passed down by word of mouth in some parts of the Timm family in South Africa. Thomas and Elizabeth and the entire communityknew who had committed the murder, and that justice had not been done. In their pain and grief, they decided to leave England with their remaining children, Charles, Edward, Thomas, Eliza and Louisa. The matter actually came to trial in 1822. We will never know if they knew this or not.

It is highly likely that Thomas and Elizabeth had at least one other child between John (1799) and Charles (1804). This child would likely have been either stillborn or would have died young, before being baptised, as we cannot (at this stage) find any reference to a child being born around 1802.

Died at Bathurst on 10th instant, aged 72 years, at the residence of his son-in-law W. Allen, Mr. Thos. Timms of the Nottingham Party. Deceased was one of the original settlers of 1820.

Ticknall is in Derbyshire, the next county over from Nottinghamshire, where Thomas was apparently born and from where the Timms emigrated to South Africa.

    DEATH NOTICE: MOOC, 6/9/44-9311

It appears that Thomas was baptised as TIMMS in England, but that may have been an error in the registration by the church minister. Thomas' son John and the trial etc., all refer to him has John Timm. Thomas signed the Nottingham party agreement as Thomas Timm and the manifests have them as TIMM.
There appears to have ben a disagreement of some sort by the son Charles with the rest of the family, and he decided to use the name TIMMS.
