    The following has not been proven:
    The Dixies are an ancient English family, both the names Bleak House and Bedford being linked with the family in Britain, and there are proud claims to descent from Robert the Bruce and hence connection to the Royal Houses of both Britain and Scotland. The fifth Lord of Annandale, also Robert the Bruce, was claimant to the Scottish throne through his mother when the male line died out and , fearing confiscation of the family's St Neots properties at Huntingdon by the Plantagenant King Edward I (1272 - 1307), he changed his surname to Dixie which he took from the fsamily's motto "Quod Dixi Dixi" which means "What I have said, I have said". Philip Dixie and his wife Lady Florence Elizabeth Neville came to the Cape with the 1820 Settlers, and it was their daughter Jane who married an Irish immigrant, Joseph Collins. This couple's son Joseph married his first cousin Elizabeth Dixie in 1875, and it was their second daughter Winifred who was known as the 'Belle of Klerksdorp'.

He was accompanied by his wife Mary 30, and four children Jane 10, Humphrey 6, Isaiah 2 & Arabella months.(a fifth probably died during the voyage) and his 18yr daughter Eliza from previous marriage. Stated he was a husbandman and naval pensioner! Lost - supposed to be drowned. Left two locations in Southeys Party, district of Bathurst. Death Notice signed by daughter Arabella Elliott and filed 3 November 1858. All children - Jane, Humphrey, Isaiah, Arabella, James, MaryAnne, John & Elizabeth were over 21 at father's death....
    {PaulTT - something is not quite right with his Death Notice. Date of death 1829. It states that all the children were majors. If that statement is correct, then ALL the children would have to have been born before 1809, which is obviously impossible. If Arabella made the statement when she filled out the form in 1858, yes they would have all been majors in 1858}

    Walter Holder wrote on 16 Feb 2015: I went to Harrismith and Glen Lennie where he had his last farm. There is no grave there, and i could find nothing to indicate that his body was recovered after the lion attacked him. I think we can safely assume that he was eaten by the lion in the vicinity of this mountain, which is at Phuthaditjaba. The dates of death is variously given as 31 March and 2 April 1855. I think he died on 31 March, but who-ever made the report had some distance to cover before he could get to authorities to report the incident.
