Notes: He figures quite prominently in Eastern Cape local history. Having been associated as accountant with the Grahamstown Gazette, the King Williams Town Gazette [from 1865] and the Diamond Fields News [from 1871] he went to live in East London in March 1875. He established a landing and shipping business known as 'Ferguson & Attwell' and also had shares in the 'East London Landing and Shipping Co.'. In 1883 he became chairman of the Board of Public School and of the Chamber of Commerce. He also became a director of the 'East London Fire & Marine Insurance & Trust Co'. and of the 'Great Stormberg Coal Co.' In Jan 1883 he was elected to the Town Council and as Mayor in 1884. He lost a great deal of money in the depression of the 1880's and particularly when the Great Stormberg Coal Co went into liquidation. In 1887 he moved to Mowbray in Cape Town, where he joined William S Smith, a well established share-broker. They did very well with the boom in gold shares in the late 1880's. He then formed an accounting business G B Attwell & Co. He continued his involvement in civic affairs and was elected mayor of Mowbray in 1899. Quite an interesting man! His wife was Marianne Shepperson [*2 Jun 1846 +20 Jun 1926] whom he married on 3 Aug 1864 in Commemoration Church, Grahamstown. She was a daughter of Benjamin Mathew Shepperson and Mary Ann Godlonton George married Marianne Shepperson on 3 Aug 1864 in Commemoration Church, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
