12. | Hugh Atherstone was born in 1743 in Higham-On-The-Hill, Leicestershire, England (son of Jonathan Atherstone); died on 16 Mar 1816 in Eckbrook, Derbyshire, England. Notes: The Atherstone family originates from Warwickshire, England, where there is a village named after the family, near Merevale. Atherstone and Atherstone Friary are named in the Doomsday Book. Early records show three brothers, William, Hugh and Samuel, moving from Higham-on-the-Hill in Leicestershire and settling in Nottingham about 1760. Hugh Atherstone is the direct ancestor of all the Atherstones in Africa. He, in company with his two brothers, owned a cloth dyeing business. He lived in Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham, and was a well known and highly respected citizen. His portrait was painted by Thomas Barber (his son-in-law). . He and his wife Ann Green had 15 children, four of whom are Mary, Hugh, Edwin, and John. of this method in any British Colony. Dr Atherstone was an extremely active man who, in addition to his medical profession and serving as the District Surgeon of Albany, had a wide range of subjects in which he was accomplished, such as music, art, astronomy, geology, botany and natural history.
