Hugh Ferrier Griffith was the original of Edgar Wallace's character "Sanders of the River". He was a Native Commissioner at Graskop in the Eastern Transvaal from 1904 to 1916. He retired as Native Commissioner at Rustenberg in 1923. Before joining the Native Affairs Department, he was a member of the Matabele Relief Force and a Justice of the Peace in Southern Rhodesia and the Cape. He was the original "Sanders of the River" in the book by Edgar Wallace.
