Notes |
-
6th August 2002, received faxed information from Maureen Rose, (Niece of Norman Zimmerman) Zimmerman Family Tree handwritten by Myrtle Day Dickens who married Norman Stanley Zimmerman.
In her notes she writes the following :
Grandpa Chris came to South Africa with his parents from Wiesbaden, Germany, where he was born. He was only a young child when they landed and went to live at Hamburg where he grew up. They moved to Grahamstown.
He was a wagon builder by trade and worked in a wood and iron building in Concorde Street, just below the Good Sheds where the National Lamp factory is now.
They lived in a little cottage in the grounds of City Lords until 6 Trollope Street was built. They built on 3 wood and iron rooms on to the house and they had a shop in the front room. When her parents were married they moved into the house. The old couple moved into the house. The old couple moved into the annex where the old lay died in Feb. 1917 (Noel Myrtle was 6 weeks old).
Information received from Becky Horne, Port Elizabeth :
ZIMMERMAN, Johann Conrad (1823), aged 38, wife Catherine, aged 33 with 5 children, from Nassau, Kesselbach, settled in King Williams Town (One source) or Hamburg (Eastern Cape) (Another source)
They departed from Hamburg aboard the 'WANDRAHM', 564 tons, on 13 August 1858, arrived East London on 6th December 1858. Aboard were 74 families, comprising 344 people of who 264 were adults. Ten children and one adult died on the voyage. Ship's Captain H Decker, Ships Doctor, Fr. August Hanf.
