Notes |
- He took the farm "Aluin Krantz" over from his father Benjamin on 15th October, 1856, and sold it to John Sweet Distin on 15th October, 1858. The Leach family seem to have stayed on the farm by some arrangement. (See photographs taken by the author B H L Leach of the ruin foundations of the house where Hermina was struck and killed by lightning as she was removing mielie meal from the bag near the door in her kitchen. Also the photo of stone covered graves in the cemetary on the farm where she was probably buried. It is said that Benjamin was away carrying foods and a brother of his arrived at the scene shortly after the tragedy and took over arrangements. This incident was reported in the "Grahamstown Journal". [3]
Married:
- Benjamin Henry was a bachelor, aged 25, farming at Olifantshoek when he married Johanna Hermina, spinster aged 20. They were married after banns were called on May; 22nd May and 2nd June, 1850. The signatures were witnessed by A A Verity and Ben Leach.
