  SHEPSTONE, John. Twenty four years old mason with a three year old son, Theophilus on arrival. The latter when eighteen in the 1835 Kaffir War was interpreter to Sir Benjamin D'URBAN. He became very prominent in Native Affairs, particularly in Natal, Zululand and Ponderland. In 1877 was sent by the British Government to annex the Transvaal.
