Notes |
- Alice and Ted McLeod farmed at Newcastle, sheep, which were killed in a frost. They trekked to Johannesburg to make their fortunes. She carried Ivy, the baby, all the way saying the wagon was too rough.
Ted McLeod staked claims all over the Reef. Widowed with young children, she sold them for £5 each and thought she had done well.
Alice McLeod married Richard Moffat, nephew of the missionary Robert Moffat associated with David Livingstone. It was this Richard Moffat who initiated the drawing up of the Biddulph pedigree, which was carried out by Leonard Biddulph in 1909. She claimed that they had the first brick-built house in Johannesburg, then a city of tents.
She was once furious with her husband for bringing Sir Thomas Cullinan, who found the Cullinan diamond, through her sitting room, calling him ' that common brute'. (Most people were common brutes in her opinion.)
Alice had 13 children. Ivy, her eldest, was twice sent to ask a woman with a garden for flowers 'for the baby's funeral'. The second time the woman was angry, thinking the child was making it up. Ivy would never have phlox in her gardens because those were what she was given.
Of the seven Moffat children only 'Bobby' survived. She was living with him at Nigel when she died.
Alice was a great horsewoman during the Boer War, and loved riding with the officers. She was very good looking, but immensely proud and even arrogant. Other people were always 'Not our class, my dear'. AMG McLeod remembers her as 'Grandmother Moffat'. He inherited through Ivy, his grandmother, Alice's silver sugar bowl, dented by being carted around Africa in wagons. [1]
