"In 1879 a young Englishman named James Butler spent a month at Grassridge recuperating from tuberculosis. He kept a diary which describes the farm and their family life. He wrote of “the large, intelligent happy family†with whom he walked, rode, read, played chess and croquet. He and Letty were later married and lived in Cradock where James ran a bookshop and printing business, publishing the Midland News. Emma married his younger brother, Charles, who joined for a time but later started a newspaper in Vryburg, then moved to Cape Town before finally retiring to Cradock where he was mayor from 1837-1940."
