Notes |
- George died in the Frontier War of 1834/1835. He was murdered by the natives at Bush Kraal between the Keiskama and Fish Rivers. His name appears on a Cenotaph engraved with S.A. War Graves Board Emblem in the cemetery of St John's Anglican Church, Bathurst.

CIRCUIT COURT OF DISTRICT OF ALBANY
That GEORGE Hiles, now or lately in the service of RICHARD BLEE and now or latly residing in GRAHAMSTOWN, is GUILTY of the crime of THEFT, in that upon the Third Day of January, in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Nine and at Roode Draay River, situated near Grahamstown, the said GEORGE HILES did wrongfully and unlawfully steal two shirts, two pair stockings, one piece of waistcoating, one remnant of a piece of jean, two shawls, four handkerchiefs, one padlock, one key, all the property or in the lawful possession of the said RICHARD BLEE, now or lately residing in BEAUFORT STREET, GRAHAMSTOWN
The trial was held on 29 May 1829 - Expiration of sentence 29 May 1830 George's sentence was: 12 months imprisonment in Grahamstown or elsewhere. First and last fourteen days in solitary confinement - spare diet. [1]
