Notes |
- Melvyn's parents moved to the farm Glennesbitt in the Bokspruit area when Melvyn was in his early teens. He attended Dale College in KingWilliamsTown where he obtained a standard 8 certificate and then returned to assist his father on the farm. At about this time Melvyn's parents moved to the farm Glencoe in the Wartrail area, the farm having been given to Melvyn's mother by her father, John William Sephton. It would appear that Melvyn did not remain with his father for very many years but leased a portion of Glen-coe where he farmed for his own account. He with his brother Ray leased the farm Ben MacDhui from their father for some years till Ray left the district. Melvyn bought the farm Ben Roy in the Maclear district in the late 1920's. After his marriage further purchases of land followed; In 1932 he bought the farm Blackrock in the Mosheshsford area. Lots 2 & 3 adjoining Ben Roy about 1950, Lower Caerlaverock 1956 and a portion of Carabas early 1960's. Melvyn was a hard working thrifty person. Just after he had purchased the farm Blackrock the 1933 depression and drought befel the farming community With the support and assistance of his young wife he survived. In later years he told how he started 1933 with approx 600 ewes to lamb and at the end of lambing there were 80 lambs alive - many of the lambs had to have their throats slit in an effort to save the ewes - and more than 100 ewes had died. To meet his commitment on the farm he had just purchased he sold hammels and the best price he was offered was 5 shillings each.
He purchased his first motor car - a Chevrolet - in 1939, prior to this if he or Bessie wanted to go anywhere it was on horseback. They rode regularly to the tennis courts to play Saturday afternoons. To visit his somewhat scattered farming enterprise he mostly went on horseback. It was only in later years that the luxury of a bakkie became a reality.
