Notes |
- Bessie's mother died while Bessie was still very young.
Bessie's father remarried and came out to South Africa about 1910, he was an employee of an iron foundry in Johannesburg. Bessie's step mother apparently wanted nothing to do with her step children,so Bessie was put into the care of a guardian, who she always alluded to as Guardie. Bessie studied at Grahamstown teachers college where she qualified as a primary school teacher. She took a post at the Barkly East school some time in the 1920s where she taught for some years. She then accepted a post as governess to teach the three elder children of Jack and Edith Sephton of Glengyle it was while at Glengyle that she became engaged to her future husband.
Bessie was much loved by everyone and known as a compassionate person. She never spoke badly of anyone and was always willing to do more than her share.
Mom did all she could to make life easy for me, her daughter in law. She loved her garden and even though she always struggled for lack of water, she managed to have a veggie garden and flowers. Mom saved all the water
she could, bath and rain water for her plants. Many times her wash in the morning would be the water from her hot water bottle. When she became frail she would not consent to having anyone to live in to help her as she felt it would be too much to expect anyone to live as she did, so sparingly. I admired and loved Mom and she meant a great deal to both Ralph and I.
