Notes |
- Robert grew up in Queenstown, was educated first at Queenswood later at
Queens College. When in standard 9 his father required him to assist in
the family coal business. Much to his disappointment he had to give up
his dearest wish of studying medicine after matric as he was not given
the opportunity of completing his schooling.
Grandfather Robert was a very restless man and was often away on holiday,
so young Robert was left to run the business on his own without much
knowledge of bookkeeping which was very important. He went to Mr James
for advice and quickly learnt what was required to run the business of
R.W.Hall and Son very successfully.
Dad enjoyed playing golf, which he did regularly on a Saturday afternoon.
He was a member of the Queenstown Golf Club and as time passed he became
a very proficient golfer playing to a very low handicap. He is well known
for his hole in one when this was written about it in the Sunday Times.
268.Yard Putt.
6/4/1941 " A BOGEY FOUR HOLE" has been done in one on the Queenstown
golf course for the first time in history. The golfer was " R.W.Robbie
Hall", who recently returned after four months in Johannesburg. He plays
to a 14 handicap. He had not been going too well in his four-ball up to
the tenth. From this tee he smacked the ball straight and hard. A
foursome ahead of Hall was putting on the green 268 yards away. The thud
behind them made them look up. As the ball rolled on to the green one of
them shouted to the caddy to pull out the pin. Hall's ball was "down all
the way," and as it dropped in to the cup the caddy waved the flag in the
air like a victorious banner.
" Nice putting, Mr. Hall," was the general comment.
Dad subsequently in later years did two more holes in one on the Humewood
golf course Port Elizabeth. As a Senior golfer he enjoyed playing away
visiting many various places.
As time moved on there were many changes in business and in 1954 it
became necessary for Dad to consider moving to the office in Port
Elizabeth. Grandfather Robert had died and Ian was unable to manage the
office alone. So the office of "R.W. Hall " and sons in Queenstown was
closed and the family moved to Port Elizabeth. Dad did a lot of traveling
for the business to maintain the orders of coal and anthricite, besides
the Durban bags, and cement that they were agents for. With the advent of
Escom electricity there was a drop in sales of anthricite as the power
stations closed. From being semi retired Dad decided in 1975 it was
finally time to retire and moved back to Queenstown to see if they would
like to live there again. City life was becoming too hectic for him.
He was a very successful business man with very high principals, he tried
to instill these principals into his children.
