Notes |
- Charles Edward was born in George. He appears to have been somewhat unreliable. He was married to Sophia Louisa who actually divorced him and took back her maiden name. He left property according to his will which was later found to belong to his daughters. Presumably he died a pauper. According to Grace Taute the divorce occurred in 1899 and one of the reasons was that Charles was a 'drunk'.
Sophia Louisa Bestly Whitcomb instituted divorce proceedings against Charles Edward Guest in November 1898. She issued a summons for costs and child support in Dec 1898 - the children were 20 and 16 years old. Grounds for divorce were cruelty and adultery with a coloured woman named Maria Moos with whom he had a child. Charles accepted that he had committed Adultery but denied the cruelty saying that she was extravagant and ran up debts. Charles further claimed to be poor and not able to support her or her children if they did not reside with him. Later he claims to be paying for boarding school for his younger daughter and offers to support the elder providing she keeps house for him. He values his property at 30 pounds and claims she removed property worth 125 Pounds The divorce case to be held on 12th Jan 1899
There is an article in the following website that could be Charles Guest as he ended his life on the farm 'Eenzaamheid' in the George district where apparently he is buried. According to the entry in the death register he was a 'Grain Farmer"
Notes in boer war http://www.angloboerwar.com/books/commando/reitz-chapter23.htm in this chapter is an account of the reluctant "Mr Guest" being forced to play host to soldiers from both sides of the conflict.
