Notes |
- James and a teenager at the time of the arrival of the settlers) soon ended up in Albany after early involvement at Leliefontein Mission in Namaqualand in or about 1824. He went on to become prominent in the Wesleyan Mission initiative in the early Free State where he is the acknowledged founder of mission settlement at Ficksburg in the late 1820’s and 1830’s, in Swaziland in the 1840’s and in Natal between 1844 and his death. He ministered to such well-known figures as Piet Retief on his fateful visit to Sekonyela in January 1838 shortly before the murder of his party by Dingaan. His story is reflected in the biography by Mears on his life of which a copy is available in the Methodist Church archives and his name occurs in many histories of the period.
