"When the 1820 Settlers arrived in South Africa there was a businessman in Grahamstown by the name of Arnoldus Bernardus Dietz. He was a Hollander of high birth who had came to the Cape from the East Indies (Java) in 1817. He occupied house and shop on erf 18 in Grahamstown where he was an agent in the wool trade for Frederick Korsten of Cradock Place, Port Elizabeth. This house stood on what is now the corner of Thompson and High streets. He was also a beef-salter, farmer, shopkeeper and builder. It was he who built the gaol in Grahamstown and, unlike Piet Retief and other early contractors who invariably lost large sums of money on these ventures, he did very well out of the gaol contract. He had a collection of rare old violins. But what endeared Mr. Dietz most to his fellow citizens was his eccentricity. As an artist, he was no mean performer on the Violin and in his own opinion Paganini, the celebrated musician, was a mere quack whose playing could not compare with his own.
He would leave his shop unattended for hours while he played the most exquisite music by himself or for the benefit of some appreciative audiences who were Settlers come to town. Whether the Marshalls were among these settlers who enjoyed good music or the company of Mr Dietz we do not know, but they named their son born in February 1832, Arnoldus Bernardus Dietz Marshall ! Mr Dietz died on his farm, Tempe, near Grahamstown in 1832 aged 64. Whether young Arnoldus benefited or not is not known, but we do know that the young Dr Atherstone was a beneficiary.
The name Arnoldus is still carried by descendants of Arnoldus Bernardus Dietz Marshall to this day.16 November 2001.
