Notes: John THORNHILL, (son of Christopher,the head of Thornhill's party,) was 15 years old in 1820; by 1838 he was engineer of the company formed to erect the first jetty at Port Elizabeth. He owned a new store in the town. While he was in Cape Town trying to raise money for the jetty, the young man attracted the interest of the American Consul, who felt that a post in the Eastern Province would benefit America's trading interest there and on the fronteir. So, as a result of his initiative, THORNHILL was in 1839 appointed Consular Agent for the United States in Port Elizabeth ~~ from Lynn McLeod John married Caroline Aletta Adendorff on 2 Nov 1830 in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa. 4. | Christopher Thornhill Thornhill, 1820 Settler was born about 1773 in Sutherland, Durham, England (son of John Camm); died after 1828. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: The family emigrated to the Cape Colony on board the Zoroaster, which left Downs Harbour on 12/2/1820. They were part of the 1820 Settler scheme and Christopher appears to have been the leader of a party. His occupation on the ship's passenger list is given as merchantman. They arrived in Algoa Bay after transferring to the Albury in Cape Town. The leaders of the party, Christopher Thornhill Thornhill , 47, of Thornhill, Yorkshire, left estates in Cumberland and brought with him his wife, Dorothea Mounsey, 35, their two sons, Christopher, 8, and John, 15, and their two daughters, Mary Francis, 10, and Anna Margaret, 13. Christopher married Dorothea Mounsey, 1820 Settler on 2 Apr 1804 in Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle, Cumberland, England. Dorothea was born on 21 Jan 1785 in Yorkshire, England; died on 21 Aug 1835.
