  1. 4.  William (Kingdom) Hicks was born in 1804 in Staffordshire, England; was christened on 22 Jul 1804 in St George, Colegate, Norwich, Norfolk, England (son of James Hicks and Maria Mann).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 22 Jul 1804, St George Colegate, Norwich, Norfolk, England

    Notes:

James Hicks and Maria Mann of Norwich, Norfolk England, were married on 7-08-1801 at Stow, Bardolph, Norfolk England. During the first half of 1804 William Hicks was born - He was christened at St George Colegate, Norwich, Norfolk.on the 22-07-1804. A brother John and then a sister Kate followed before their father James passed away. On the 5-04-1812 Maria married John Blythe at St Peter Permountergate, Norwich. According to the census of 1841 seven children were born of this union, including twins, a son and a daughter.

On the 22nd April 1819, the 5th frontier war had broken out when Grahamstown the chief military centre on the eastern Cape frontier was attacked by 10,000 invading Xhosa. Bravely and successfully defended by a garrison of less than 400 men under Col.Willshire, they persued the enemy back over the Keiskamma river (the territory between the Fish and Keiskamma rivers had been declared neutral). Hostilities on the eastern frontier of the colony continued. The 1820 Settlers were constantly being raided by marauding bands who had made their way through the neutral territory for the purpose of plundering and burning homesteads, stealing cattle and destroying the crops. Many of the settlers lost their lives in these raids.

Troop reinforcements were called for, and the 6th Regiment of foot was ordered to the Cape landing at the Cape of Good Hope in November 1821. The two companies at once re-embarked and proceeded by sea to Fort Frederick, Algoa Bay.(Port Elizabeth)
From there they marched up the military road to Grahamstown.

William Hicks had joined the regiment, and was to spend the following three years guarding the military posts with detachments at Grahamstown, Fort Willshire, and at Fort Beaufort.

In March of 1825 the regiment embarked for India, returning to England in 1842.
Whether William sailed for India and then returned to England at an earlier date is unknown, but he was in England in 1834. I have a book he owned entitled “The New Cabinet of Arts”. In the flyleaf is written :---- “ W. HICKS carpenter . Black Friars Row London 1834”Also inscribed is :----“W. HICKS, his book . Do not steal this book for fear of shame, for here you see the owners name.” On another page is written
    W. HICKS Staffordshire.

There are no records of William’s movements between 1834 and 1844! The story handed down through the years is that he became a ship’s carpenter on one of Charles Massey’s ships, and that is how he met Margaret. It is also said that they eloped; the result being, she was disinherited for running off with the ship’s carpenter. It is told that when Charles eventually died he had repented and had left her an inheritance. William wouldn’t allow her to accept it because he felt that her father had cut her off while he lived, now that he was dead, Margaret didn’t need his money.

That they eloped I have no doubt, because it has taken almost thirty years to find the record of their marriage, without which I couldn’t have concluded the history.

William Hicks married Margaret Massey on the 12-08-1844 at St Nicholas, Liverpool Lancashire England.

William re-joined the 6th Regiment, now known as the 6th Royal Warwickshire Regiment of foot. (1st Batallion ), and set sail for the Cape, arriving in November of 1846 with his pregnant wife. On the 4th January their son was born at the Castle in Cape Town, and named William Charles Massey Hicks. On the 29th April 1849 a daughter was born and named Elizabeth Eleanor Massey Hicks.
