    a Freemason

" We would like to go up and see the pompom. But Pop says if you ever do that you know what to
get. No one can get in becose the door is always locked. We sit at back of Mr. Lees little hut and
watch them come out of the tower. Mr. Lee is a round little man and he is a town clerk. He lives next
to us oposit to Crosses Hall and has a garden with peach trees. There is a wall between. walls are
easy to climb no one sees us near the wagon house where the peach trees are close to the wall. we
throw all the pips on the roof. Mr. Lees is mrs. simms father and Trixie Lees who is going to marry
with Alfred main who has a bother Roland who thinks a lot of himself. Round the church is a square
and fence. There are few houses past the school only the jail and Miss Jollys house. There is a
great hall crosses hall near us and Walkers house. It has a big space, here we play the soccer game.
The windows look like church windows. Sometimes one is open and we climb in to look. It is a
funny kind of hall with fat pillars in the middle holding up the roof. Two upstairs ways Upstairs is
another hall with funny little rooms around one end. Billie says the Free Masons use them. Free
masons are a secret society of only men. A new free mason has a terribel test to go in. He has to lie
in a cofin with a rope round his neck and a sharp sword over his hed in one of the little rooms Billie
says. A goat comes with great horns and pokes him. Why a goat. He has to know the whole Bible
backwards and forwards. No girls can be free masoneses. Once a girl crept in a clock and listened to
F.Ms having their secret sociaty and she was caught. They wanted to kill her but that would be a
crime and F.Ms dont do crimes only good deeds so they had to make her a FM and she was the
only one. Now they very careful when they have secret sociaty and a man stands at door and
sentry go like the militery with a great sword in his hand. Other children told me all this. The men
wear little aprons with rubies on them. Pop was a Free Mason in Cradock. When I told him all about
it he said what a load of nonsense. dont you try any of that hiding in clocks. I would not hesitait to
cut your head of if I found you. I said I never wish to belong to a secret society becos of too much
talking. and Charles* (* The author's brother) will never be a F.M. if he has to learn all that Bible he
cant even rember one verse of Guy Fox Guy when we take the stufed guy round. "

"DIED, at Graham's Town, on Friday afternoon 14th inst., William LEE, Sen., aged 71 years. Deceased came to this Colony as a British Settler in 1820, and has ever since resided in the District of Albany, where he always maintained the character of an upright member of the community, and of a zealous devoted member, for near half a century, of the Wesleyan Church. From an accident which he suffered a few years ago he never rallied - his constitution received a severe shock, until it terminated his earthly career. He was sustained throughout his affliction by "the hope of the Gospel." " His end was peace." "
