David and Mary were 1820 settlers. issue: 7 sons and 3 daughters. The three daughters married three 1820 settlers: Gradwell, Hartley and Kelbrick. Said to have left his "ancestral home, Way Bank Hall, Yorkshire" to emigrate [Keighley paper, August 18, 1877]. Said to be woollen manufacturers in Yorkshire (Agnes Gradwell). Embarked 1-Jan-1820 at Liverpool; landed at Algoa Bay 6-May-1820.

David CAWOOD, of Way Bank Hall, owned a flourishing cotton mill near Bradford and Keighley and in traditional; frock coat and top hat, regularly attended the cotton auctions at Bradford, Leeds and Keighley.
It is interesting that his mother [née GIBSON], who died in 1818 received her Wesleyan membership personally from John WESLEY, and never missed a ticket until her death at the age of 86. David's father Joshua, died at the early age of 50 and both he and Mary are buried at Keighley.
It is said that David pioneered the switch-over hand-operated cotton looms to power-driven looms early in the 19th century. The workers regarded the advent of power looms as a threat to their livelihood. It was feared that one machine, able to do the work of many men, would replace men in due course. Superstition and fear took possession of these simple folk and they burned David CAWOOD's Mill to the ground.
In addition to this disaster a cotton famine resulting from crop failures hit the industry causing many other Cotton Mills in Britain to shut down.
As a result of the Napoleonic wars, England found herself crippled and exhausted. Distress and unemployment were rife and Parliament, on 12 July 1819, decided to expand £50,000 in sending 4000 settlers to the Cape, in an effort to alleviate some of the distress in England.
Unbeknown to the settlers, the locations they were to occupy were to constitute a buffer zone between the marauding Kaffirs [sic]and the Eastern Cape farmers.
The emigration schemes was heartily taken up and 90,000 applications were received from which the 4000 were selected. In due time they embarked for the Cape in 21 ships.
Among the settlers, on the vessel "John", was David CAWOOD, 43 who with his wife Mary had left their ancestral home "Way Bank Hall" in Yorkshire, with their nine children; James 21; William, 19; John, 18; Joshua, 16; Elizabeth, 13; Mary, 12; Samuel, 10, Joseph, 9 and Sarah, 5.
FOOTNOTE: Because David CAWOOD did not write down where "Way Bank Hall" could be found, no trace now exists of the old ancestral home.

He was listed as a woollen manufacturer. David directed a division split from
Hayhurst's party. He made his home in the old Kaffir Drift Post buildings.

Party to the Cape

In September 1819, Samuel Liversage, originally from Wybunbury parish, but then at Burselm, Staffordshire, got together a party intent on immigrating to the Cape. Amongst them was the Thomas Manley family, consisting of Thomas, Margaret and 7 children?Ralph (12y), John (10y), Mary (8y), Thomas (7y), Joseph (5y), Ann (4y), William (2y)--and also Thomas Robinson then a 20-year old farmer.

Several changes were made in the company between September and November. Thomas Robinson dropped out and was replaced by his older brother Abraham, then a widower who brought his two young children Joseph (5y) and Ann (3y). Some of the Manley children had died, and the couple decided to leave some with friends and so they were only bring their three sons?Ralph, John & William. The William Ford family replaced a family that had dropped out. Joseph Scoot, also described as a widower, was bringing his children, Mary (7y) and Thomas (6y).
Interestingly Abraham Robinson and Joseph Scott?s children match the names and (almost) ages of those the Manley?s intended to take[iv]. No marriage for either gentleman has surfaced.


Journey to the Cape

The Liversage party sailed from Liverpool, aboard the John, hired transport ship number 51, captained by Ralph Pearson, on the 13 Feb 1820. The Hayhurst part also sailed aboard this vessel, bringing the total number of emigrants aboard to about 213.

William Watson, who was 15-months old when the vessel sailed, later reported that 17 or 18 young children died on the voyage of measles[v].

Captain Pearson recorded the following in his log book while at Madeira, dated Tuesday, 8 Feb, 1820 ?Departed this life, John Ford, age 2 years and 9 months?? His body was committed to the deep the following day. Thirteen days later, on Monday, Feb 21 1820, 4-year old George Ford died and his body was committed to the deep. The following Thursday, Feb 34, the last Ford child?5-month old William, died and his body committed to the deep[vi]. They reached Aloga Bay in May 1820. The party settled at Wilmotvale

Richard was killed in an attack by Xhosa tribesmen on the wagon they had been using to collect wood. Samuel managed to escape, and his brother John died later as a result of the injuries sustained in the attack.

Richard and his second wife, Sarah KENT arrived in South Africa with Mahoney's party on the ship Northampton. Sarah had been his housekeeper prior to the death of his first wife Elizabeth MITCHELL.

DIED, at Queenstown on the 7th April 1872, after a severe illness of some weeks, the beloved wife of Mr. W. STILWELL, Sen., aged 74 years and one month. She leaves a disconsolate husband and large family circle to mourn their irreparable loss. Deceased came to the Colony with her husband in 1820.
