    DEEL XXXIX

DEATH OF CAPTAIN DANIELL, R.N. – We regret to have to announce the decease of a gallant retired officer of H.M. Navy, Captain Richard Daniell, father-in-law of Messrs. Rice and Henry Jones, which took place, at his residence in Newlands, on Tuesday evening. The spotless name of this gentleman is known throughout the length and breadth of the colony, for to him we are mostly indebted for the introduction of thoroughbred sheep into the frontier of the Eastern Province. Captain Daniell entered the navy as a mere youngster, was present at the siege of New Orleans, and saw hard and varied service. He subsequently returned to England, retired on half pay, and in 1820 came out to the Cape, settling in the Eastern Province, at what has long been known as Sidbury Park, and founded the village of Sidbury, which he named after his birthplace in Devonshire. Wealth and numerous family gathered around him, but they were not allowed to escape some of the vicissitudes of Kafir wars. Like a brave man he battled against them to hold his own, and became a sort of prince among flockmasters. In the last war he suffered greatly, having cattle and sheep swept off in large numbers by the enemy. Tired out he resolved upon selling his properties and settling down in the bosom of his grown-up family near Cape Town, and in 1855 left the frontier, to the sincere regret of every one who knew him. For a short time, about two years, we believe, he resided at Swellendam, but for the rest of his days, till he died, he resided near the metropolis. He has gone from us full of years, of honourable remembrances, and has bequeathed to his fellow-colonists a name and children which all esteem. May he rest in peace, and may we yet have many as kind, as good, as generous, as honourable as he was. He will be greatly missed by a very large number of friends. He is to be buried this afternoon at Cape Town."
