"Louis (aka Leopold Ernst) Goldschmidt. Born in Prussia in 1836. Arrived in East London, British Kaffraria in 1857.

The descendents of Louis Goldsmith have discovered that he was one of the British-German Legionaires who arrived in East London in British Kaffraria in February 1857. His real name was Leopold Ernst Louis Goldschmidt. His Regsitration shows him as a 19 year-old farrier from Prussia who had served in the 1st Jagers. Therefor, we presume that he was born in Prussia in 1836 and not in Ireland in 1826. The earlier (unsubstantiated information) was taken from an article in the Mercury in 1922 where he claimed to have been born in Armagh County, served in Crimea and Indian Mutiny (both untrue) and arrived in Cape Town in 1856."
