    Malvina was a beautiful woman with wonderful long auburn hair, with a regal and upright bearing. Quiet, impractical and not suited to the rigors of frontier life. She died aged 63 whilst on an ox-wagon journey in the Macleantown district. They were going to the farm of their eldest son, Edward Richard Dell, near Kei Road. Rupert Dell, her grandson, erected the tombstone on her grave at the Macleantown Cemetery, Eastern Cape, South Africa in 1882. According to a Death Certificate in her husband's estate file she died 19 July 1874.

    Her father Richard was born 1789 in Surrey England and his wife was Mary Diplock born 1791 in Lambeth Marsh, England. They were married abt 1814 at St Martins in the Fields, Trafalgar Square, Middlesex, England.
    When her husband was dying she travelled from Algoa Bay to King William's Town to nurse her husband. On her return she found that his partner had sold her out and left her destitute. Second marriage to Richard Wilkinson not good. She allegedly died in a riding accident.

    Some doubt exists about this lady.The Dell record shows that she was the only daughter of Admiral and Lady Gower and was married to John Dell Son of settler Edward Dell. The Gower record shows that she was the daughter of Richard Gower who apparently was the son of an Earl and his wife was the daughter of a Duke.

    Extract from the Beal Preston book.'Other happy occasions were two weddings in the Miles family.Samuel Miles had fallen in love with Mary Ann, daughter of Philip and Charity Hobbs who had also come out in the Weymouth in Jame's party. According to the old St John's Church register, Samuel and Mary Ann were married on the 11th February, 1847. Elizabeth Miles signed as a witness. Their first Child,Ellen Eliza was born on the 19th March 1848. This couple were to be together for over 73 years and both died in the Cathcart District, aged 95 years.They were the grandparents of Niel Austin Miles. It is believed that Mary Ann and her sister Charity were under the care of the Rev.William Shaw and his wife for a while possibly when their Mother died.'
