He was the Treasurer of the Cuylerville Building Society from which the school (no longer standing) and the Church (now a National Monument) were put up. Settler H.J. Lloyd and his family were given land with the other members of Bailie's party at Cuylerville. He was the Treasurer of the Cuylerville Building Society from which the school (no longer standing) and the Church (now a National Monument) were put up.
He and his family were in the defence of Cuylerville during the Frontier War of 1835. A desperate battle was fought here. The defenders were short of ammunition and, to make matters worse, were taking cover in long dry grass with the wind blowing down on them from the enemy's position. The Xhosa set fire to the grass and the flames came roaring down on to the already precarious position of the beleaguered settlers. Someone must have prayed hard for the wind suddenly changed and blew the fire back on to the Xhosa, scorching them out and saving Cuylerville.
On the Lloyd tomb at Cuylerville these words appear:
"It pleased God to call away
    Our brothers from our side
Just in the morning of their days
As young as we, they died".

name EASMENT in Matrimonial Court Minutes

William Estment was born 2 April 1803 possibly in Dorsetshire. His early life is a bit of a mystery. He sailed on the Kennersley Castle with Phillips' Party. He joined the party as a late replacement for a chap who had decided to marry and stay behind in England. On the official list his name appears as Esmond. He eventually became a dealer in wines and spirits. It seems as if he was also a money lender as there are a number of files in the Cape Archives dealing with court cases wherein he was sueing various people for money owed. Late in life he was a director of the Fort Beaufort Bank. He was involved in the War of the Axe wherein he led an attack on the enemy at Wolfs Crag. After Ann died he married Elizabeth Saynor in 1854. She died in 1856. He then married a widow, Mary Mandy born Dougherty in 1856. He died 18 Dec 1869 at his home near Dundas Bridge in Grahamstown aged 66 years. On 1853 Grahamstown voters list as shopkeeper in Beaufort Street.

Charles DENTON and Elizabeth SENYOR were married by banns on 11 August 1793 in Sheffield Cathedral

    Both made their mark

    Witnesses: Jo.SAYNOR and John HALL

If this is the marriage of William's mother, less than a year after his birth, then it is possible that the Charles DENTON who emigrated with Richardson's Party was William's stepfather and not his older brother. It would also explain why William chose to be known as William SENIOR DENTON

Wm. son of Eliz. SENYOR, Spinster, was baptised 16 December 1792 in the parish of Sheffield

[No suitable baptism for a William DENTON can be found in Sheffield for a birth in November 1792. The above baptism suggests that he was born illegitimately to Elizabeth SENYOR and may explain why he used the middle name SENIOR and gave that as a middle name to all his children]
