He was a Lieutenant in the 24th Regiment of Foot, which served in South Africa from 1806 to 1810. In June 1810 the regiment left for India, but returned 4 months later of 12 October 1810. Joseph married Charlotta in a double wedding - her sister Susanna also married an officer of the 24th, Lieut John Blake.
