    Notes:

ROBERTS - There are few old settlers left now to look back upon the initial trial of colonisation or to be cheered by the bright prospects which are now South Africa. The last to pass away was Mrs. Maria Roberts, of Oak Terrace, Grahamstown, and who could speak of the days when the natives used to mount the hill to the east of the city and threaten to come down and eat them up. She was born on April 6, 1796 - her parents Benjamin and Mary WOOLCOTT, belonged to one of the old omersetshire families. She was brought up in affluence and refinement, but after her marriage her husband was attracted by the then projected new settlement in Africa, and she went with him as one of the British settlers of 1820. She was in weak health, and had to be carried on board the Kennersley Castle on Jan. 1, 1820, and landed in Algoa Bay on May 1, 1820. Mrs. Roberts often spoke of the hearty kindness of the Dutch farmer who seemed sorry to have to put them off his waggon, and leave their small party in the open veld in Lower Albany at New Bristol, and the Bristol party resolved to call their location. It is remarkable that in this Bristol party were three weak and sickly members and that those three outlived all the other adult settlers of 1820 except one. Early in the history of the settlement, the deceased met the Rev. William SHAW, and later Mrs. SHAW, with whom was formed a life long friendship. She thereafter joined the Methodist Church, and took part in its early struggles. Her house became a prophet's chamber, and was the resort of the preachers and pious, and her earnest piety, gentleness, and valued counsels attracted a large circle of friends. In her last days she was tenderly cared for by her children and adopted daughter, and had the sympathy of her dearest friends and settler families. It is sad to think there is but one left out of that band of settlers who turned a wilderness into thriving cities, towns, and villages, and initiated the stable industry of South Africa.

    Notes:

In the Grahamstown Journal George Lee's homestead was burnt and attacked by the natives in 1846: Saturday May 16 1846
Tuesday 2 o'clock pm News has just come in that this morning just before daylight the Kaffirs fired the farm house and kraals of the Messrs. BEZUIDENHOUT (mentioned in a previous article) on the New Year's River. They also burnt at the same time the farmhouse of Mr. G. LEE, in the same neighbourhood. It seems that a number of Kaffirs have had possession of these buildings for some days past, sheltering themselves in the buildings and putting cattle in the kraals. These marauders have now gone off towards Kaffirland, first firing the premises, and BEZUIDENHOUT in bringing in the report is in hopes of receiving assistance so as, if possible, to intercept the enemy on the East side of the Zuuerberg, the point where it is probable be will cross the range, being at the back of Hilton, or between that point and the hamlet of Riebeek.
In the Grahamstown Journal dated 17.08.1850 his obituary reads; "DIED, at Graham's Town on Monday, the 12th instant, Mr. George LEE, aged 44 years. Deceased was the second son of the late Mr. W. LEE, one of the original Salem Party of British Settlers who founded that interesting village in 1820. Some years after his arrival in this Province he was united in marriage to the only daughter of William TROTTER, Esq., whom he has left, with a numerous family of children, to deplore the loss of an inestimable husband. As a member of society deceased was held in deserved reputation for straightforward integrity in his dealings, and for steady public spirit in relation to the affairs of the country in which Providence had cast his lot. As a consistent member of the Wesleyan Church, he was ever ready to advance the interests of that communion, or of any other holding the truth in the love thereof. He bore a painful affliction with the fortitude and resignation of a Christian, and died triumphantly in the full assurance, by the faith in the Atonement, of a glorious resurrection to eternal life. "Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my last end be like his." Grahamstown Journal,
