William married Sarah Anne Kemp on 24 Jun 1857 in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Sarah (daughter of - husband partner of Martha Kemp and Martha Kemp) was born on 12 May 1832 in Sittingbourne, Kent, England; died on 31 Mar 1916 in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Sarah Anne Kemp was born on 12 May 1832 in Sittingbourne, Kent, England (daughter of - husband partner of Martha Kemp and Martha Kemp); died on 31 Mar 1916 in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

    Notes:

There is some evidence that Sarah Ann was the illegitimate daughter of Martha, who she brought from England with her.

She did indeed marry William John HARTLEY on 24 June 1857 in Bathurst. She was described as being 25 at the time. Her DN states that she died on 31 March 1916 aged 83 and was born in Kent, parents unknown. All this would seem to tie in with the baptism you quote below in Sittingbourne, Kent on 1 July 1832 (birth 12 May)

BUT, James KEMP was Martha's brother and not her husband! There is something in the Hartley Story which says that Martha was seduced by her employer and that Sarah Ann was the result. Now it may be that James let his name go on the baptism register to preserve Martha's good name and that they then both high tailed it out of the country and headed for Grahamstown. I don't know exactly when Martha or James KEMP arrived in SA. Apparently James KEMP was a gardener, but there were three James KEMPs in Grahamstown in the 1830s, which doesn't help. James the gardener apparently advertised fruit trees for sale in the Grahamstown Journal of 1834. He died aged 77 in 1868 at Philip HOBBS' house and in his will left everything to his "sister Martha HOBBS, wife of Philip HOBBS"

Sue Mackay wrote on http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/index.php/additional-information/k-surnames/2141-kemp-james-extra-data : "It is not clear whether the James KEMP in Erith’s Party is the same as James KEMP the gardener, who was the sister of Martha KEMP, third wife of Philip HOBBS. The Death Notice (Cape Archives) for James the gardener says he was a childless widower and suggests a birth of around 1791. The death took place at the house of Philip HOBBS and Martha (nee KEMP) signed the certificate. His will (Cape Archives) leaves everything to his sister Martha, whom failing her two children Sarah Anne HARTLEY (nee KEMP) and Benjamin HOBBS. James the gardener was known to have been at the Cape in 1834, as NAAIRS has a memorial asking “that he be allowed to continue his superintendence of the Drostdy garden”. Martha had a daughter Sarah Ann KEMP born in 12 May 1832 in Rodmersham, Kent and baptised in Sittingbourne Wesleyan Chapel on 1 July 1832, supposedly the daughter of James KEMP and his wife Martha. Martha’s maiden name was KEMP, and she was baptised in Rodmersham on 11 July 1802, the daughter of James and Mary. I suspect that she pretended that her brother James was the father at the baptism of Sarah Ann, but I do not know whether James was at the Cape at that time or whether they both went out after the birth of Sarah Ann."

The name Pig and Whistle was given to the hotel by members of the South African Air Force during World War II as a result of its famous pub.

Main executor of his will was William Monkhouse Bowker.

    East London's Dispatch
    24 May 2008

SOUTH Africa's oldest pub has finally closed its doors after a record 175 years in business.
By David Macgregor, Port Alfred Bureau

Bathurst's historic Pig and Whistle Hotel opened for the last time a month ago - leaving residents of the village in a froth over the closure of the popular watering hole.
A second attempt yesterday to sell the 11-room national monument and adjacent supermarket, bottle store, and several cottages proved even more disappointing than a previous bid in December.
Originally called the Bathurst Inn, the first buildings were built in 1831 by 1820 settler Thomas HARTLEY as a one-stop accommodation and provisions centre for ox wagons passing through.

    Notes:

Carol Gainsford writes in the EGGSA Genesis magazine no 56 of August 2017:
One of the family visited Bathurst, and met an old resident, named Mr. Armstrong, who had lived in the village all his life, and was then 84 years of age. In his time he had been the undertaker, builder, carpenter, farmer, etc. He remembered Thomas Hartley Jnr., from whose store he had made purchases as a child.
He took him to the old Hartley homestead and to the cemetery where he could photograph the Kidson grave. The old man said that about the year 1912, he and his father were commissioned to renovate the Settler graves, in both the Anglican and Methodist churchyards. The Kidson grave was found to be in a lamentable state of dilapidation – the inscriptions on the tomb were faded and illegible, a tree having grown right through the crypt, dislodging the bricks and breaking the plaster.

The tree was chopped out and the damage repaired, and when digging down to the roots, they discovered the grave was not the orthodox type, but in fact a vault, or subterranean room, to which admittance could be gained by removing a stone trap-door and leading down some steps. On the floor of the vault were little platforms, upon which had rested the remains of William and Anna Kidson, the one on the right, directly below the tomb, had upon it a lead sealed coffin containing the body of William, the outer wooden shell had long since rotted away;whilst on the left rested the body of Anna – completely exposed as the wooden coffin had rotted away and she had not been placed in a leaden shell. The amazing part of the discovery was that she had not suffered the ravages of time, having been so well embalmed that after some 70 years, she was still perfectly preserved – the features perfect, her red hair lying in a tumbled mass about her head and the skin unmarked.

The article continues to inform the reader that the Settler William Kidson and Morris Slowman (or Sloman) spent a month in Gaol – 14 days on bread and water and 14 days on normal Government Prison rations. Their crime? Leaving their allocated locations with goods bought from the Government Stores at Bathurst and travelling further afield in the hope to sell these goods so that they could better provide for their families.

Even though they had permission from the Rev. William Boardman who was the eventual leader of the Willson Party, they were charged on the 1st April 1822 by the unpopular Harry Rivers (Landdrost of Albany) who was acting for the Governor Lord Charles Somerset.
Our Settlers certainly lived a miserable life under these conditions and seem to have been treated as criminals rather than settlers.
