"In the baptism of his children he is listed as either a manufacturer or a merchant of Southowram or Halifax, but in his burial he is listed as a farmer and in his will he is listed as a gentleman. In the will of the uncle of his first wife (Joseph Hinchcliffe in 1784) of his first wife Mary Hinchcliffe's father, he is listed as a shalloon maker which is a fabric from Chalons in France and also described as a woollen blanket or coverlet for a bed.
