He was one of the 3 independent settlers and he had travelled on board the Brilliant. The poet, Thomas Pringle, had been in the same ship, and described Dr Caldecott as being 'a little dogmatic anabaptist surgeon' who used to preach on board ship. Apparently he went to visit the mission station at Bethelsdorp and after the 9-mile walk back to the bay he drank cold water while overheated and died. He left a widow and 6 small children, one of whom became a member of the Colonial Legislature and Mayor of Grahamstown.

    Rosa Wright by much self denying economy saved a large sum of money which she bequeathed for the building and endowment of Christ Church, Grahamstown as a thank offering to God for all the blessings they had received in the country of their adoption. The foundation stone was laid in 1873 and the building was open for service in 1877. Illuminating the chancel of the church are six beautiful windows representing the Crucifiction, Ressurection and Ascension of Our Lord. This lovely church built in stone is claimed to be one of the finest specimens of Gothic architecture in South Africa. The great window on the south side is the first stained glass window to be made in South Africa and is the work of Prof. F. W. Armstrong, A.R.C.A. It is a memorial to Julia, the daughter of William and Rosa Wright. This Julia married James Henry Greathead. From the time th church was opened for service in 1877 until she died at the age of 83, Julia Greathead, and after her her daughter Rosa who died at the age of 99 used to sit whenever attending service in the pew directly under the great south window. { Some Frontier Families, p 303 }

    She left money to build the Christ Church in Grahamstown.
