Notes: At age 19 Robertson left for the gold fields in Barberton, then went to the diamond fields in Kimberley and then the new Witwatersrand gold fields and entered into partnership with his childhood friend, Abe Bailey. He did very well and met his cousin Gypsey, who had moved to Johannesburg from their farm Thornlands. He named a mine in which he had interest "Gypsey" and bought a farm which he later sold and is now Bertrams suburb. With that he bought property in Constantia in the Cape, the house was named High Constantia and he had a very successful wine making business using the vines of Groot Constantia. The Bertram cellars are now where the tasting rooms of Groot Constanta are and High Constantia is now a convent. Robertson married Elizabeth Maude Fuller on 12 Jun 1889 in St Mary's, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Elizabeth (daughter of Frank Fuller and Adelaide Amelia Duffield) was born about 1871; was buried in Constantia, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

Notes: The Dutch East India Company had to supply their own defense force to prevent, mainly, the English from taking over, so they contracted mercenaries from Europe. Johan was a cavalry officer in the French Army, Cologne was closely allied to France, and was recruited from there. He arrived in the Cape in about 1795. It is very likely they were stationed on what is now Farm France in the Banhoek Valley. Johannes married Rosina Petronella Kok on 29 Oct 1815 in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. Rosina was born about 1792; died on 10 Oct 1858. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

Notes: Her death notice says she died at Wellington farm in the district of Queenstown. It was signed by "S. Bertram, born Fuller, daughter of deceased" at Queenstown on June 11, 1894 -- or 38 years after the death. It's possible a legal requirement arose to certify the mother's death before the father's will could be executed, his death having taken place that same year. Notes: Married:
