Miles attained Provincial Colours for tennis.
He was employed on the Simmer and Jack Mine until 1940 when he enlisted with the Transvaal Scottish 8th army to serve from Abyssinia to the close of the North African campaigns. He was a sergeant and earned four military medals –

• Africa Star
• War Medal 1939 – 1945
Upon his return from the war he served as a Native Commissioner in Windhoek for two years and then joined the family businesses of JC van de Pol, Standard Cardboard, Sunlight Stationery, Vincent Manning and later in the establishment of a copper rolling enterprise in Brakpan. In retirement he held a position in NYK a Japanese shipping company for a few years. { Will Bowker }
