LETTERS RECEIVED BY GOVERNMENT HOUSE Graham's Town, 10.5.1837.
Lieut.Governor A Stockenstrom to Governor Sir Beniamin D'Urban, forwarding the Memorial of a 'respectable and deserving Widow' Jane Forbes for His Excellency's consideration. The Memorial of Jane Forbes, Widow, to His Honour A Stockenstrom Esqre, Lieut.Governor &c.,Humbly sheweth, that Memorialist's husband the late Alexander Forbes was murdered at the first commencement of the late Irruption by the Kafirs at their location at Waay Plaats near Bathurst, and that their house and household goods were burned and their valuable stock of cattle and horses swept away, and the crops destroyed,as Memorialist has specified at large to the Government Commission for investigating the losses sustained by sufferers in the Kafir War;that Memorialist at the period when these disasters occurred had five small children and was soon after delivered of the sixth, all of whom are alive and in a state of great helplessness and destitution, the oldest being at this time only in her tenth year;that the destitution to which Memorialist and her family were reduced by her calamitous losses and her inability owing to her peculiar circumstances to make a livelihood for herself and family by her own exertions, was alleviated by the kind assistance dispersed to her through the Board of Relief which consisted of an allowance of Rations from Government, as well as a stated pecuniary allowance from the funds placed at the disposal of the Board;that the assistance which Memorialist received both in rations and money up to the end of last month has since that time been stopped, and that her crop for the present season is an entire failure, and that she has no further resources of her own nor any friends able to assist her, and that therefore she is utterly unable to bear up against the difficulties of her situation and is apprehensive that she and her family must soon be reduced to a state of starvation; -that she therefore humbly prays that Your Honour will be pleased to interpose on her behalf by directing that the Government allowance of Rations may be continued and such funds the public assistance afforded her, as the exigence of her case requires. And Memorialist as in duty bound will ever pray, &c.her JANE x FORBES mark Waay Plaats, nr Bathurst April 29th 1837(Pencilled minute: Mrs Forbes' statement of losses was delivered to the Government Commissioner who assisted her to the amount of £40 or £50, and as far as aware she is a deserving woman.)

    LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR'S MEMORIALS RECEIVED
Memorial of Jane Forbes, Widow, addressed to the Lieut.Governor:... that subsequently to the Peace being restored Memorialist returned to the farm and struggled hard to get a living there until the Military Post was removed from Waay Platz - when she was compelled to leave the place and to remove to town, thinking she should there have a better opportunity of earning a livelihood. -... Memorialist humbly solicits to be allowed the grant of one of the Erven which she understands are being given to the poor and industrious people in the neighbourhood ...Supporting testimonial: I have known the Memorialist ever since the Death of her husband and believe her to be an industrious and respectable woman well deserving of any assistance which His Honor may have it in his power to afford her.
