    Page 2 incorrectly states that both of STRETCH's parents emigrated to the Cape. STRETCH's father died in Limerick in 1822 (MS 14827 Cory Library) and, as STRETCH goes on to record on Page 13 of his journal, his mother arrived at Beaufort West from Ireland on 15 Aug 1825 (This should presumably be 1826, since it was only towards the end of 1825 that she requested the Colonial Office for a passage on a government vessel to the Cape: G McCall THEAL, comp., Records of the Cape Colony [London, 1897-1905], XX111, p.408 R.W.
