Notes: Ann was the eldest child of the 1820 settlers, Francis & Mary Whittal. She firstly married Charles King and after his death Thomas Dry. She had two King children but her son did not survive. Ann died at the age of 93 on the same dayr Frank. She was the Postmistress in Cradock for many years. As a young girl she was mentioned for her bravery when she took ammunition to the men after dark who were surounded by the enemy during one of the frontier wars. "Durylerville, the local farmers went into laager round the little church and were continually hard pressed. A few miles from a favourite crossing of the Fish River, the little settlement needed all hands in its defence. The women mades of powder for the defenders and Ann Whittal carried them as well as constant supplies of food to the men, later taking her place among them with her gun repelling attacks on the laager.
