He was well educated and could read and write Greek and Hebrew. He had connections with Lord Packenham and Lord Mansfield both present at the christening of Francesca Hanna, Catharine Mary, in San Mugual Azores. Lord Mansfield married to Emily de Visme, daughter of Gerrard de Visme who owned plantations and land in the Azores.
